Cicero (106-43 bc), Roman writer, statesman, and orator. Although he had a distinguished political career, he is best known as Rome's greatest orator and as a man of letters. Born in Arpinum (now Arpino, Italy), Marcus Tullius Cicero is also known in English as Tully. As a youth he studied law, oratory, literature, and philosophy in Rome. After brief military service and three years' experience as a lawyer defending private citizens, he traveled to Greece and Asia, where he continued his studies. He returned to Rome in 77 bc and began his political career, aligning himself with statesman and general Pompey the Great. In 74 bc he entered the Senate.

Although Cicero's family did not belong to the Roman aristocracy, he was supported in the competition for the consulship in 64 bc by most rich and powerful Romans because of their distrust of his aristocratic but less respectable rival, Lucius Sergius Catilina, known as Catiline. Cicero was elected, but during his administration Catiline organized a plot to overthrow the government. Cicero suppressed the conspiracy and had several members of Catiline's group executed. Julius Caesar and other Roman senators argued that Cicero had acted too hastily, without giving the conspirators due process of law. Because Cicero refused to make peace with Caesar, Pompey's archrival, in 58 bc he was forced into exile. After a year in Macedonia he was recalled at the instigation of Pompey.

Cicero occupied himself with reading and writing philosophy until 51 bc, when he accepted an assignment to govern the Roman province of Cilicia as proconsul. He returned to Rome in 50 bc and joined Pompey, who had by now become Caesar's bitter enemy. After Pompey was defeated by Caesar in 48 bc, Cicero, realizing that further resistance was hopeless, accepted Caesar's overtures of political friendship. While Caesar was virtual dictator of Rome, Cicero lived as a private citizen and wrote extensively. After Caesar's assassination in 44 bc, Cicero returned to politics. Hoping to see a restoration of the Republic, he supported Caesar's adopted son, Octavian, later the emperor Augustus, in a power struggle with the Roman consul Mark Antony. Octavian and Antony were reconciled, however, and Cicero was proscribed and murdered on December 7, 43 bc.

In his writings Cicero created a rich prose style that has exercised a pervasive influence on all the literary languages of Europe. His writing covers numerous subjects of intellectual interest, and he greatly enriched the vocabulary of his own language as well as those of the modern European tongues. Nearly all of his philosophical works were borrowed from Greek sources and, apart from their intrinsic merit, are of great value in preserving much of Greek philosophy that might otherwise have remained unknown. Outstanding are the treatises On the Republic, On the Laws, On Duty, and On the Nature of the Gods. His rhetorical works, written in dialogue form—particularly On the Orator—are of value as the products of an accomplished rhetorician and as a rich source of historical material. The most famous of his orations are the 4 speeches against Catiline and the 14 so-called Philippics against Antony.

Among the minor works of Cicero, the treatises On Old Age and On Friendship have always been admired for their tone of cultivated geniality. Highly important for historians are four collections of letters written by Cicero to acquaintances and friends. These letters are a spontaneous self-revelation of their author and an excellent source of information on the politics of the final years of the Roman Republic. What was the biggest, richest, and most powerful nation of ancient times? The mighty Roman Empire! Based in the city of Rome, it stretched across three continents and included millions of people. The Roman Empire lasted for 500 years.

ROME’S RISE TO POWER

According to legend, the city of Rome was founded in central Italy in 753 bc. As Rome grew richer and stronger, its soldiers took over nearby land. Rome’s well-trained, disciplined army was a fearsome fighting machine.

By 30 bc, Rome controlled most of Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. To guard these conquests, the Romans built walls and military forts. They also built excellent roads so that soldiers could march quickly to trouble spots.

THE EMPIRE BEGINS

The Roman Empire began in 27 bc. That year, a tough, clever army commander won control of Rome after a long civil war. His name was Octavian, but the Romans called him Augustus. The title Augustus meant “honored or holy leader.” Augustus became the first Roman emperor. The month of August is named after him.

Augustus saw that Rome needed new government. He appointed professionals to manage the government’s money and make sure that enough food and fresh water reached the city of Rome. He reorganized the army and set up new police and firefighting teams. He encouraged family life by paying parents to have more children. He brought back old ceremonies to honor the gods who were said to guide and guard Rome.

By the time Augustus died in ad 14, he had linked Roman lands into a single awesome organization. This was the Roman Empire.

GOVERNMENT

Emperors remained in charge of the Roman Empire for almost 500 years. Some, like Nero, were tyrants. Some, like Commodus, were stupid and cruel. But most ruled well, and a few, like Trajan, were outstanding. When Roman emperors died, they were worshiped as gods.

Each province (region) of the empire was ruled by a governor. The governor was helped by trained officials and sometimes by local kings and chiefs. Everyone in the empire had to pay Roman taxes and obey Roman laws. They had to use Roman money, as well. Roman coins showed the emperor’s portrait. That way, everyone knew who was in charge!

WHO LIVED IN THE ROMAN EMPIRE?

Rome ruled over almost 50 million people in 27 bc. They included Greeks, Egyptians, Celts, Africans, Arabs, and Jews. Traditionally, Roman society was divided into two upper classes and two lower classes. Senators belonged to the highest class, and slaves to the lowest class. Over time, class became less important than wealth. After ad 212, each free person in the empire was treated equally, as a Roman citizen.

Everywhere they ruled, the Romans introduced their own language, Latin. They also brought their technology, art, entertainment, and building styles. Many Roman temples, theaters, roads, and aqueducts (bridges that carried water) still survive in many parts of Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East.

CAPITAL OF THE EMPIRE

The city of Rome was the center of the empire. It had temples for worship, law courts, houses and apartment buildings, sports arenas, and shops. It also had crowded streets, smells, dirt, and noise. About 1 million people lived in Rome in 27 bc, making it the largest city in the world.

People moved all the time from the countryside to Rome, but many could not find work. Emperors provided food and spectacles like gladiator shows to keep them content and stop them from rioting. One Roman writer said that emperors ruled by “bread and circuses.”

CONQUEST, THEN COLLAPSE

In the early years, the Roman Empire kept on growing. But later Roman emperors found the lands of the empire too vast and too varied to control. In ad 284, the Roman Empire was divided among four rulers. Emperor Constantine united it again in ad 324. Constantine became a Christian, and gave Christianity a favored position in the empire.

Soon after Constantine’s rule, the empire was attacked by fierce tribes from the north and east. Their raids caused terror and food shortages. In ad 395, the empire split into an Eastern Empire and a Western Empire. The wealthy Eastern Empire was ruled from Constantinople (now Istanbul). It remained strong. But poor and weak Western emperors could not defend their land. The last Western emperor was forced out of Rome by invaders in ad 476. The Eastern Empire survived as the Byzantine Empire.

The fall of the Roman Empire in 476 did not mean the end of Roman civilization. The Latin language lived on, and it developed into modern European languages such as French, Spanish, and Italian. Roman art, buildings, and writings influenced later cultures.

Заговорить по-английски за 3 месяца

Предположим, вы идеально подходите для должности, о которой давно мечтали. Но все ваши карьерные планы разбиваются об одно требование - свободный английский язык, а ваш уровень - "читаю со словарем текст известного мне содержания". Или вы "дозрели" до учебы в бизнес-школе, но ваши амбициозные планы грозится перечеркнуть провал на языковом экзамене. Или у вас реальные шансы на повышение, и единственное препятствие - необходимость общаться с начальником-экспатом на его родном языке. В каждом из подобных случаев вас можно поздравить: мотивация - это половина успеха! Теперь осталось лишь найти своего учителя, определиться со стратегией и тактикой обучения, выделить два-три часа в день для регулярных занятий и начать повторять как мантру: "I will speak English fluently".

Step one – поиск мотивации

Начать никогда не поздно, тем более что цель того стоит.
«Язык учится 6 месяцев, а не 11 лет, – утверждает Влад Воробьев, ведущий курса Career English в интернете.
Для того чтобы языковые занятия были эффективными и приносили удовлетворение, нужно четко понимать, зачем вам это надо. Возможные варианты ответа:

• Для удовольствия. Может, это звучит неправдоподобно, но многим людям нравится учить языки. Они прямо-таки наслаждаются мелодией иноземной речи, впитывают параллельные смыслы чужих слов, качают «интеллектуальную мышцу» заучиванием фраз и оборотов.
• Из тщеславия. Люди, которые во всем привыкли быть первыми, просто не могут себе позволить знать иностранный язык посредственно.
• Для здоровья. Ученые выяснили, что люди, разговаривающие на нескольких языках, дольше живут и сохраняют ясность ума до глубокой старости.
• Чтобы жить более интересной жизнью. Далеко не во всех мировых культурных центрах есть русскоговорящие гиды, а вот пристроиться к английской экскурсионной группе в Лувре или Эскориале удастся даже самому нерасторопному туристу.
• Для обращения к первоисточникам. Вполне достойная цель – засесть за словари, чтобы прочитать в оригинале «Властелина колец» или понять, о чем поет Том Вейтс (Tom Waits).
• Наконец, чтобы заработать много денег. Завербоваться на нефтяную платформу близ острова Ньюфаундленд или стать СЕО трансконтинентальной корпорации – в любом случае без свободного английского вашу мечту будет непросто осуществить.

Для того чтобы языковые занятия были эффективными и приносили удовлетворение, нужно четко понимать, зачем вам это надоВзрослые люди и даже большие начальники, штудирующие учебники, – так выглядит модная тенденция lifelong learning. Многие преподаватели готовы выезжать в офис к 7–8 утра, чтобы успеть провести урок на свежую голову. А готовы ли к этому вы?

Step two – поиск учителя

Вообще, все современные стратегии обучения иностранным языкам так или иначе являются вариацией коммуникативного метода, в соответствии с которым на первый план выходит развитие навыков общения, и потому студенты начинают разговаривать буквально с первого занятия. Однако понять, какой учитель найдет наиболее короткую дорожку к вашим доселе спавшим языковым талантам, можно только посетив несколько пробных уроков у разных тренеров или преподавателей. Рекомендации же знакомых не всегда оправдываются, а администрация курсов, которой важно продать вам эти занятия, по определению не может дать объективной информации.
Несмотря на некоторые плюсы групповых занятий (прежде всего, привлекательная цена, возможность разыгрывать мини-спектакли и отслеживать собственный прогресс относительно других студентов), более эффективно заниматься один на один с преподавателем. Средняя цена индивидуального полутора-двухчасового урока – 30–60 у. е.
Вообще, обучение иностранному языку можно сравнить с подготовкой спортсмена. Тренеру по языку нужно доверять так же, как будущий чемпион безоговорочно доверяет своему наставнику. Его следует уважать, восхищаться им как творческой личностью, ценить как увлеченного человека, находиться под влиянием его харизмы.
Лирическое отступление 1

Во многих компаниях в так называемый «мотивационный пакет», наряду с оплаченным мобильным телефоном, бесплатными обедами и талонами на бензин, входят курсы английского языка прямо в офисе. На первый взгляд, это великолепная возможность сэкономить время и деньги. Действительно, бутерброд сам пришел к вам, нужно всего лишь его прожевать! Однако, как показывает практика, сначала уроки вызывают всеобщий энтузиазм, но через короткое время интерес резко падает, и группы распадаются. А все дело в том, что у корпоративных студентов очень слабая мотивация. «За компанию» или из-за того, что «такая возможность – грех отказываться», язык почему-то не желает учиться. Впрочем, руководители компаний поняли это, и, если организуют уроки английского в офисе, оплачивают уже не 100%, а лишь какую-то часть. Плюс вводится дисциплинарный контроль: за пропуск занятий без уважительной причины нерадивый студент лишается возможности продолжить курс. Таким простым способом отсекаются люди, которым, по большому счету, язык не нужен, но их разгильдяйство на уроках мешает прогрессу остальных.

Step three – time management

Итак, у вас есть тренер, и вы готовы выйти на дистанцию. Трехмесячный марафон потребует от вас полной концентрации внимания, усердия и сил. Приготовьтесь на «сто дней» отказаться от всех прочих хобби, сократить до минимума свое участие в бытовых хлопотах, не авральте на работе. София Иевенко, руководитель отдела по работе с банками и лизинговыми компаниямиСОАО «НСГ», предупреждает, что нужно быть готовым к хроническому недосыпанию, к тому, что будете смотреть только англоязычные фильмы и читать только «нужные» учебники и книги. «Необходимо полюбить процесс изучения языка, чтобы это стало неотъемлемой частью вашего образа жизни», – советует эксперт.
Для того чтобы все успевать, нельзя терять времени. «Книги я читаю по дороге на работу, фильмы смотрю вечером, упражнения выполняю во время перерыва на обед, – рассказывает Анна Талицкая, сотрудник Научно-технического центра по ядерной и радиационной безопасности. – Два-три часа в день – это тот минимум, который нужно отдавать занятиям».
Тренеру по языку нужно доверять так же, как будущий чемпион безоговорочно доверяет своему наставникуПоскольку обучение иностранному языку состоит в освоении четырех навыков (чтение, устная речь, понимание и письмо), каждый день вам придется упражняться по всем этим направлениям: читать, слушать, заучивать наизусть, пересказывать, выполнять грамматические упражнения.
Для быстрого и качественного пополнения словаря и грамматики рекомендуется заучивать 150–200 языковых конструкций в неделю. Именно так: не зубрить отдельные слова, а осваивать язык более крупными единицами – словосочетаниями и предложениями, чтобы сразу улавливать не только смысл, но и грамматические характеристики, а также особенности словоупотребления (то, что называется usage). «Разумеется, в самом начале не хватало ни памяти, ни мозгов, ни времени на то, чтобы правильно выполнять все задания. Но если учить по 20–30 конструкцийкаждый день, то уже на второй неделе становится легче. Главное не делать перерыв, потому что откат происходит резкий и очень сильный», – советует Ирина, менеджер по персоналу.

Принципиально другой способ освоения иностранного языка – метод «погружения». Группу студентов привозят в пансионат или отель, где в течение двух-трех недель происходит активный тренинг навыков устной речи и понимания. Если преподаватели подобных выездных школ обладают достаточной квалификацией, то через разные виды занятий, применение техники НЛП и других механизмов воздействия на сознание и подсознание студенты получают довольно эффективный «пинок». А потом все равно нужно брать в руки словари и тетради, садиться к компьютеру и закреплять пройденное, учить конструкции – одним словом, переходить к классической системе обучения.

Step four – вижу цель!

Знание 1000–1500 речевых формул и активное владение примерно 6000 слов, что соответствует 5-му уровню Upper-Intermediate по шестиразрядной шкале Headway, позволяет поддерживать беседу на любые темы и сделать английский вторым рабочим языком вашей карьеры. Три месяца –  это, конечно, минимальный срок, за который можно «пробежать» этот марафон, начиная со 2-го уровня Elementary. Если изучать язык с «нуля», то срок может увеличиться до 5-6 месяцев. Тут все зависит от индивидуального прогресса: насколько быстро и прилежно вы сможете осваивать еженедельную норму в 150–200 единиц. «Если у человека все нормально с мотивацией и целеполаганием, то это время может увеличиться на 30 процентов, не больше», – считает Влад Воробьев. В психологическом плане гораздо проще сжать зубы и рассчитать силы на трехмесячный марш-бросок, чем плестись из последних сил к расплывчатой временной цели. «Уровень вашего владения языком свидетельствует не о том, какой вы умный, а о том, какой вы усидчивый и старательный, это моторные навыки», – утверждает Влад Воробьев. «Бегло заговоритьпо-английски за три месяца можно только при практически полном погружении в языковую среду. Без отрыва от работы добиться этого чрезвычайно сложно», – предостерегает от излишнего оптимизма София Иевенко.
Опыт показывает, что из 10 человек, начавших заниматься иностранным языком, заметных успехов добиваются лишь четвероПервый прорыв, когда человек понимает, что процесс пошел, возникает примерно через месяц регулярных занятий, задействовавших развитие всех четырех указанных выше навыков. «Мне стало интересней жить. Я теперь смотрю фильмы в оригинале, по возможности общаюсь с носителями языка, в конце концов, подпеваю любимым песням», – делится Анастасия Ушакова, руководитель проекта по созданию Центра обучения ДКСУ IBS.
Если то, чему учили в институте, еще не до конца выветрилось, то при хорошей мотивации через полтора-два месяца можно подготовиться к прохождению интервью на языке. Сама по себе эта процедура несложная – типовые ответы на типовые вопросы. А вот если вам предстоит обучение на получение степени МВА, все же лучше обратиться непосредственно к преподавателям выбранной вами бизнес-школы. Step five – что дальше?

Научившись говорить относительно бегло, необходимо проверить свой английский, так сказать, в «боевых условиях». Сегодня в любом крупном городе не представляет сложности найти товарища по беседам на иностранном языке. Так, открытые к общению экспаты тусуются, например, на сайтеExpat.ru. Там же можно выбрать себе преподавателя из числа native speakers. Заниматься с преподавателем-иностранцем на ранних этапах обучения нецелесообразно: во-первых, их услуги традиционно стоят гораздо дороже, а во-вторых, передача элементарных лингвистических знаний через опору родного языка обычно происходит легче и эффективнее. Но зато никто, кроме носителя языка, не сможет вам с абсолютной достоверностью донести usage, ведь даже безупречные с точки зрения грамматики фразы могут звучать смешно просто потому, что «так не говорят».

Step six – капля дегтя

Опыт показывает, что из 10 человек, начавших заниматься иностранным языком, заметных успехов добиваются лишь четверо. Остальные теряют интерес в процессе учебы и бросают занятия. Точно так и в спорте – некоторые достигают профессионального уровня, но лишь единицы побеждают на Олимпиаде. Да и в обычной жизни происходит то же самое: из тех, кто собирался сделать блестящую карьеру и совершил впечатляющие первые шаги, далеко не все становятся большими начальниками.
Получив импульс, останавливаться уже нельзя, ведь после этого начинается самое интересное – совершенствование, набор лексики, отработка произношения, приобретение беглости, умение понимать гарлемских таксистов и малолетних детей.
